Functional training is the use of exercises that involve complex and multi-joint movements of the upper body, lower body, and core. Functional training uses basic functional movement patterns such as pushing, squatting, pulling, and rotating that improve the athlete’s movement proficiency in these primary patterns to give him/her an edge and augment their performance. Functional training is essential because if emphasis is not put in any of the various functional movements of the body, the body loses its ability to perform and increases your chances of injury.
